Testing carried out on this proposed development, of a Tesco supermarket at Cooltederry, Portarlington, uncovered a number of features. Given the similarity of the fills of the majority of the features and the position of the field as flood meadow it is likely that the features are related to drainage and of relatively modern origin. Large areas of the field have been filled with building waste material and along the riverbank the subsoil is sand, which is likely to have come from the dredging of the river. The testing revealed mainly shallow drainage-related features within the proposed development site. However, the testing did not cover all areas of the field and therefore archaeological features or deposits may remain in situ in untested areas.
