An assessment was carried out in February 2007 as part of the programme of archaeological works on the route of the proposed M7 Portlaoise to Castletown/M8 Portlaoise to Cullahill motorway scheme. The archaeological testing of Contract 2: Testing Area 1 involved the mechanical excavation of eight test-trenches beneath ESB wires in the townland of Coolfin and Boherard and the excavation of three test-trenches through the townland boundary between Coolfin and Cross. The townland boundary comprised an earthen bank lined with trees and hedges. No archaeological features or deposits were identified in the test-trenches.
