An assessment was carried out in February 2007 as part of the programme of archaeological works on the route of the proposed M7 Portlaoise to Castletown/
M8 Portlaoise to Cullahill motorway scheme. This assessment of Contract 3: Testing Area 10 involved the mechanical excavation of seven trenches, two in Clonrud townland and five in Clonard or Cappaloughlin townland, where access was previously denied because of the presence of badger setts. Three of the trenches were excavated along the townland boundary between Clonrud and Clonard or Cappaloughlin. The townland boundary comprised a drain lined by trees and dense hedging. The seven trenches resulted in an additional 244 linear metres being excavated. No archaeological features or finds were exposed in the trenches.
