Testing was undertaken at Clonroosk and Clonboyne, Portlaoise, along the path of the proposed Togher foul servicing scheme pipeline, Portlaoise, on 25 October 2007. This was carried out using a tracked excavator with a flat, toothless bucket. Five test-trenches were mechanically investigated across two areas of archaeological potential. Area of archaeological potential AAP 1 was identified within Clonroosk, where the path of the pipeline was within the immediate vicinity of a possible fulacht fiadh. AAP 3 was identified as a possible recumbent standing stone that would be within the immediate vicinity of the pipeline. The later site was located within Clonboyne. Four trenches were excavated within AAP 1, and nothing of archaeological significance was noted. The possible fulacht mound is located outside of the wayleave of the pipeline. One trench was excavated adjacent to AAP 3, and nothing of archaeological significance was noted in this area. Further monitoring of topsoil removal was recommended.
