Excavation commenced at this site during November 2007 and continued for three days. The site is located within the compound associated with the proposed N9/N10 Knoctopher to Powerstown road realignment and as a result would be adversely impacted on by construction work. All archaeological works located within the CPO of the scheme are subject to ministerial directions. This site is located outside of the CPO and as a result was subject to licence. The area of the site was c. 10m by 8m. The site consisted of two pits, two spreads and a possible stake-hole. The largest circular pit measured 1.42m long by 1.36m wide and 0.3m deep. Both pits contained charcoal and heat-shattered stones and the two irregular spreads contained similar material. It is possible that this site represents the remains of a small burnt mound or fulacht fiadh.
