Monitoring was carried out at Garden Row, William Street, Kilkenny, in response to a mixed-use development. The site lies within the historic city of Kilkenny, in an area known as Hightown, which formed part of the Anglo-Norman settlement, dating from the late 12th century. This area was subsequently enclosed by a town wall, which was erected during the 13th century. The line of this wall has been retained down through the centuries.
Monitoring of all excavation works associated with the development was recommended following an assessment of the site by Melanie McQuade (Margaret Gowen & Co. Ltd) in 2003 (Excavations 2003, No. 1029, 03E0844). This recommendation was subsequently made a condition of the planning permission. Nothing of archaeological significance was noted during the monitoring, although a small portion of the site was excavated without archaeological supervision. The remains of a small wall foundation were noted within the trench in that area.
