Two test-trenches were opened within the garden of No. 77 Maudlin Street, Kilkenny. No. 77 Maudlin Street fronts the south of the street, with the area of testing to the rear of a vacant dwelling house. Within the medieval suburbs of Kilkenny, St Mary Magdalen’s Hospital, a leper hospital, stood at the north side of the street.
The overall stratigraphy was consistent in both trenches, comprising a well-worked topsoil overlying a layer of 19th-century infill, which itself overlay a slightly silty clay. The natural deposition at the base of the trenches comprised a clean sandy clay. Otherwise nothing of archaeological significance was found.
