Excavation was carried out to the rear of No. 23 James Street, Kilkenny, on a site previously partially excavated by Paul Stevens (Margaret Gowen & Co. Ltd) (Excavations 2000, No. 537, 00E0730). The proposed development area lies immediately inside the line of the town wall. Three phases of activity were noted.
Medieval (13th–16th century)
Medieval pottery was found in various contexts on the site with the bulk of this being residual. Two pits, however, yielded pottery that was almost exclusively medieval. These may be interpreted as rear-garden refuse pits.
Post-medieval (16th–17th century)
Two garden-soil deposits produced finds from the late 16th to early 17th century.
Modern (18th–early 20th century)
Two pits lined with stone represented the late 18th and early 19th-century phase along with a culvert.
