In advance of the submission of a planning application for a café development at the rear of No. 41 Friary Street, Kilkenny, an impact assessment was requested by the client. The desk study determined that the site was c. 50m outside the medieval city walls of Kilkenny and within an area of high archaeological potential. Testing uncovered the remains of an early 18th-century square outbuilding with an adjoining oven. The building appears to equate with a structure shown on the Rocque map of Kilkenny 1758. In order to avoid the destruction of the building while also facilitating development on the site it proved possible to design foundations that would provide for a ‘buffer-zone’ of 0.3m above the archaeological remains. When construction commences the groundworks will be monitored.
