Monitoring took place on 25 October 2007 of the proposed permanent spoil storage location as part of work for the N9/N10 road scheme. The site was located at Chainage 13900 to 14000 in the townland of Crowbally, Co. Kilkenny. It lies on the western side of the valley for the Derrylackey River, which is a tributary of the Blackwater River.
One archaeological feature was identified within the area. It measured c. 2m by 2m, although it appeared to extend to the north outside the limit of excavation. The feature was sub-oval in plan and had oxidised subsoil against its north-eastern and southern edges. A black charcoal-rich deposit which measured 0.7m by 0.4m was located beside the south-eastern area of oxidisation. A dark-brown sandy clay with infrequent inclusions of charcoal and sub-angular stones appeared to fill the remainder of the feature.
As the feature was located at the very limit of the site it was felt to be preferential to preserve the feature in situ rather than excavate it. The feature was covered with terram and topsoil.
