A small-scale test excavation was undertaken at a proposed development site on Main Street, Castlecomer. A single test-trench was excavated to the rear of an existing premises. A single feature of archaeological significance was exposed during the excavation. A disused box drain, following a north-east/south-west orientation, was identified across the northern section of the trench c. 2–3m from its northern terminus. The drain consisted of two courses of limestone spaced 0.3m apart and at a depth of 0.15–0.3m below the natural clay surface. The base of the drain was unlined and cut directly out of the natural clay. The interior of the drain was filled with a grey/black silty deposit with no inclusions. No artefacts were recovered from the excavated section of the drain.
