Testing took place on the line of a proposed sewer in the field immediately to the north-east of Jigginstown House and within its zone of archaeological potential. A trench, 0.65m long and 2m wide, was dug along the line of the proposed pipe. Offsets, 10m long, were cut at intervals on either side.
The area had been landscaped after the construction of an adjoining housing development, and the uppermost 1m consisted of topsoil mixed with building site debris. This overlay silty clay with disturbed recent vegetation, which was the original surface of a low-lying marshy field. The trenches were deepened at seven points, showing that this original topsoil was c. 1m thick. This overlay a deposit of mid-brown peaty soil 0.5β0.6m thick. Under this was the natural subsoil, a hard gravelly clay, light-grey in most places.
The only archaeological remains were found at one of the nearest points to Jigginstown House. It consisted of some pieces of red brick and mortar fragments, and sherds from a glazed red earthenware roof tile of 17thβ18th-century date.
