This site was excavated as part of the N9/N10 Kilcullen to Waterford scheme, Phase 3: Kilcullen to Carlow. During excavation of this site 625m2 of topsoil was removed to a depth of between 0.35m and 0.4m and four pits were uncovered. Pit 003 measured 2.06m by 1.35m and 0.32m in depth. Pit 006 measured 1.31m by 1m and 0.2m in depth. Pit 008 measured 2.1m by 1.7m and 0.7m in depth. Pit 024 measured 1.48m by 1.33m and 0.25m in depth.
Three of the pits (003, 006, 024) were similar in shape and content. They had gradually sloping sides with a single fill or two fills. These fills contained angular stones, charcoal flecks and some burnt stone. Pit 024 contained two spindle-whorls within the fill. Pit 008 was different in shape and content to the other pits. It had deep vertical sides with a very uneven base. The base was higher in the centre than around the edges. There were a lot of stones in the natural at the base. The fills of this pit were also different. It contained eight different fills, some of which contained occasional and moderate charcoal and some of which seemed to be redeposited natural soil. Post-excavation analysis and reporting is ongoing.
