The grant of planning for the construction of a rear extension to a dwelling and the construction of a new additional residence within the rear and side garden areas of 5 Church Road, Celbridge, required testing. The site is located on the northern side of Church Road and in the western area of the town. It is situated within the zone of archaeological potential established for Celbridge and across the road from the site of St Mochua’s early ecclesiastical site. The curving nature of Church Road at this location is believed to preserve the outline of the original enclosure of St Mochua’s.

Six trenches were excavated by machine fitted with a toothless ditching/grading bucket, following which the sides and bases were cleaned by hand and examined. In addition, the spoil was raked through in order to determine the artefact-bearing potential of the topsoil. Nothing of archaeological interest was uncovered during the course of testing, which indicated that the surface of the underlying bedrock lay at a depth of up to 0.45m below the existing ground surface.
