Monitoring was undertaken of all topsoil-stripping/general ground reductions associated with a residential development at Carlowgate, Castledermot. The site is located close to the junction of Carlowgate with Barrack Road and Main Street, in the centre of the town and within the established zone of archaeological potential. There are no previously identified features of archaeological interest associated with the site, although the line of the former town wall is located in the field to its rear. No features, deposits or structures of archaeological interest were uncovered during the course of the work, although 30 sherds of pottery were recovered. These were submitted to Clare McCutcheon for analysis, which indicated that nineteen sherds were medieval in origin with the remainder dating to the 17th–19th centuries.
