Testing of the N9/N10 Kilcullen to Waterford scheme by IAC Ltd identified the presence of an isolated pit. The pit, which was subcircular in plan, measured 1.32m by 0.45m by 0.16m. Three sherds of Bronze Age pottery were found during testing. The site is located 80m north-west of E2864 (see No. 798, Excavations 2007). Excavation took place in July 2007.
An area measuring 400m2 was opened at the location of the pit to ensure no additional subsurface archaeological stratigraphy was present. Cleaning of the site revealed a linear north–south drain, three stakes and a possible pit/post. The drain measured 22m by 1.1m by 0.25m and had a U-shaped profile. It contained a single compact sandy-clay fill. The stakes and pit/post were located 0.75–1.3m to the west of the drain and appear to represent the remains of a fence line. All three stakes contained similar loose mid-yellow/brown fills and appear to have been removed prior to decay.
The pit/post feature which was identified during testing was subcircular in plan with a diameter of 0.6m and depth of 0.2m. The fill comprised loosely compacted light-brown/grey sand. It is probable that this is the remains of a truncated post.
The features recorded on site would appear to represent the remains of a field drain and fence line and are not deemed to be of archaeological interest.
