This site was excavated as part of the N9/N10 Kilcullen to Waterford scheme, Phase 3: Kilcullen to Carlow. The site was identified during testing as an isolated pit measuring 0.75m by 0.63m by 0.08m in depth. The pit contained a single fill, comprising grey/brown silty clay with stones and charcoal flecking. The site was located towards the western boundary of a small pasture field; this field boundary also defined the boundary between Booleybeg and Crookstown Lower townlands. The testing also identified a burnt-mound site 120m to the north excavated under licence number E2855 (see No. 778, Excavations 2007). Topsoil clearance and excavation work on this site took place on 6–18 July 2007. The area of excavation measured 400m2.
The excavation work identified the remains of a number of north-east/south-west furrows and a north-west/south-east stone-lined drain. These features were located in the northern half of the site, which was quite waterlogged. Two post-holes and four pit-type features were recorded towards the southern half of the site. These features were predominantly infilled with a grey/black silty clay. The dark nature of this fill was indicative of standing water and was not derived from charcoal. The overall appearance of the ‘pit-features’ was quite irregular and it is probable that they are tree boles rather than archaeological features.
