Testing took place in advance of the construction of a rear extension to a commercial property at No. 3 Woodstock Street. The rear garden area of the site, in which the testing was concentrated, lies immediately outside the postulated western line of the town wall. Five trenches were excavated by machine fitted with a toothless ditching/grading bucket, following which the sides and bases were cleaned by hand and examined. In addition, the spoil was raked through in order to determine the artefact-bearing potential of the topsoil. Nothing of archaeological interest was uncovered during the course of testing and it was noted that the proposed development area had been subjected to extensive ground-reduction works in the past, probably associated with the existing building.
