Pre-development testing was carried out on the site of a proposed extension to a terraced house at 11 Stanhope Street, Athy, Co. Kildare, on 18 June 2007. The site is located in the northern part of the area of constraint around the historic town of Athy and south-west of the site of the Tubber Muiland Gate, the north gate into the medieval town. The site was very confined, at just 4m in width, and it could only be tested following the demolition of a dilapidated shed at the rear of the site. Testing comprised the excavation of a single trench on the footprint of the proposed extension. A thin concrete slab, 0.06m in thickness, covered the site and overlay a 0.46m-thick mixed rubble deposit in a dark silty clay matrix. The rubble overlay dark gravelly silt, 0.15m in thickness, and this in turn overlay the natural gravel. No archaeological material was uncovered.
