Test-trenches as a component part of an impact assessment were excavated at a proposed development site in Gortadoo townland, Ballyferriter. A track machine with a 2m-wide flat grading bucket incrementally excavated six trenches. The topsoil was a mid-brownish-grey sandy clay, with an average depth of 0.35m, in the western extent of the site and a very dark-brown sandy silt, with an average depth of 0.4m, in the remaining fields. The subsoil, a mottled grey/white/yellow sandy clay, was consistent throughout the site. Agricultural activity was evident in some of the trenches in the form of drainage ditches and plough furrows. Nothing of archaeological significance was recorded within the trenches.
