Test-trenching was carried out in advance of the construction of a new industrial park at Dromore, Farranfore. Sixteen test-trenches were opened across the site and all were 100m in length. Archaeological material was uncovered in one of the trenches near the centre of the proposed development. A number of large timbers were uncovered in a natural dip in the subsoil in this area. Many of the timbers comprised split logs up to 2m in length. Adze marks were noted on at least one piece of timber and a number of possible pegs were identified. This east–west-oriented test-trench was extended to the north and south to determine the extent of the timbers. The timbers were found to be confined to an area measuring 10m by 10m. The timbers may represent a trackway or platform focused on a particularly deep portion of bog. This archaeological feature is within an area submitted for outline planning permission and comprises Phase 2 of the proposed development. The timbers disturbed by the mechanical excavator have been submerged in groundwater within the trench and the remainder of the feature has been temporarily covered in plastic. It is envisaged that this site will be excavated in 2008.
