A programme of monitoring was carried out at various locations in County Galway from August 2006 to April 2007. The proposed development comprised a new water mains system and upgrading of the existing system in the vicinity of Tuam, Shrule and Headford. The majority of the work was carried out in existing carriageway.
A programme of advance testing followed by full-time monitoring in certain areas of the scheme and intermittent monitoring in other areas was carried out. Monitoring was carried out at identified areas, in close proximity to archaeological monuments. Periodic inspections were carried out in other areas of the pipeline routes. Ministerial consent (E2839) was obtained for works in and around Athenry. However, construction works in Athenry have been postponed and are not likely to proceed for the foreseeable future.
No features of archaeological significance were found in the areas monitored.
