Investigations took place along the route of the proposed N18 Gort to Crusheen road scheme. A burnt mound (Site 199) was identified in the EIS for the proposed scheme in the townland of Rathwilladoon during the walkover survey. The area opened up during testing revealed the edge of an extant burnt mound, which was up to 1m in depth and measured 10m north–south by 9m. Most of the site is outside the CPO, with the open side of the ‘horseshoe’ facing east, away from the CPO and towards the wetland area on the edge of which it is located.
