Pre-development testing was carried out on the site of a proposed extension to a terraced house at No. 9 Abbey Street, Loughrea, Co. Galway, on 31 July 2007. The site is located in the northern part of the zone of potential around the historic town of Loughrea. The town moat, a remnant of the medieval defences of Loughrea now known as ‘The Watercourse’, runs just a few metres to the north of the site. Testing comprised the excavation of a single trench on the footprint of the proposed extension. Loose dark-brown silty garden soil, averaging 0.3m in thickness, overlay grey glacial till in the west of the trench and yellow boulder clay in the east. No archaeological material was uncovered.
