In May 2007 pre-development testing was undertaken at the site of a proposed residential development at Killaloonty on the outskirts of Tuam. A children’s burial-ground and ecclesiastical remains (GA029–104) are located to the immediate west and north-west of the proposed development. A geophysical survey was undertaken in March 2007 and highlighted a number of areas of possible archaeological significance. The testing involved the excavation of eight trenches throughout the site in areas highlighted by the geophysical survey. In seven of the trenches nothing of archaeological significance was uncovered. In one trench a mottled stone surface was revealed directly below the topsoil. This was the surface of a roadway, marked on the first-edition map, which ran to Wilfort Cottage to the north of the proposed development site.
