Test-trenching was undertaken in respect of the proposed development site at Homefarm, Moycullen, to establish the nature and extent of any surviving archaeological remains at the site, as GA068–044, a castle, is situated to the south of the proposed development.
Test excavations were carried out and a small tracked excavator fitted with a 1.2m-wide toothless bucket was employed to open the four trenches. The location for the four trenches was established with consideration for the footprint of the proposed development. Trench 1 was excavated in the north-western area of the site across the proposed entrance and driveway. It was excavated from east to west and was 21.5m long. Trench 2 was excavated along the length of the western side of the proposed dwelling. It was 15.5m in length. Trench 3 was excavated along the eastern length of the proposed dwelling parallel to Trench 2 and was 16m in length. There was some disturbance evident in the northern end of the trench caused by tree-root action. Trench 4 was excavated across the length of the proposed domestic garage and was 10m in length. The soil profile was consistent within all four trenches and consisted of dark-brown silty sandy topsoil over creamy yellow silty sandy natural subsoil.
Pre-development testing at the proposed development site did not reveal any archaeological deposits, find or features.
