Monitoring of trenching associated with the installation of a gas pipeline by Bord Gáis Éireann was carried out within the town of Headford and its environs from October 2007 and is currently ongoing. The pipeline extends through the townlands of Headford, Deerpark, Bunanraun, Cahernehenny, Donaghpatrick, Carrowconlaun, Oltore, Stonpark or Bawnmore, Rareen, Carheenard and Balinrickard. The pipeline is located within the zone of archaeological potential associated with GA042–122 (ecclesiastical remains), GA042–147 (earthwork), GA042–0740 (enclosure), GA042–07402 (field system), GA042–02101 (castle) and GA042–02102 (mansion). The trench ranges from 0.45m to 0.95m in width and has a maximum depth of 1.2m. All works to date were carried out along public roads within previously disturbed areas. Trench fills included sands and gravels and other construction fills. Undisturbed subsoil was also occasionally encountered. No archaeological features were exposed during monitoring of this section of pipeline.
