Investigations took place along the route of the proposed N18 Gort to Crusheen road scheme. For the purpose of the testing programme the route was divided into three sections, with Section 2 tested by Ed Lyne (see No. 610 above, 07E0457) and Section 3 by James Kyle (07E0489, see No. 589 above). The areas tested represented areas where there were previously unknown or suspected sites of archaeological interest and also tested previously identified geophysical anomalies.
Test-trenching on Section 1 commenced on 28 May 2007 and was completed in June 2007. The testing methodology generally consisted of mechanically excavating a 2m-wide trench along the centre-line, with offsets staggered on alternate sides of it every 20–25m. A total of twelve sites were identified during the Section 1 testing.
