Monitoring was carried out at No. 17 William Street West, Galway city, between 16 and 21 August 2007. The proposed development entailed the removal of the existing ‘Kelly’s’ house and former shop and the construction of a three-storey building with basement and dormer attic. The ground floor of the new building will accommodate retail space, with the first and second floors comprising four one-bedroom apartments. The existing structures within the rear of the site were proposed for demolition and the proposed plans consist of reinstating a landscaped area with paving and refuse storage.
No. 17 William Street West is located outside the zone of archaeological potential, GA094–100, of the Anglo-Norman town of Galway. Monitoring of excavations at the site exposed a black/brown silty layer with modern debris, stones, cobblestones, tile and an area with evidence of discarded slag. There were no features of archaeological significance noted in the site.
