Monitoring was carried out at No. 18 Mary Street, Galway, in February 2007. The proposed development entails ‘the demolition of the flat roof rear extensions at ground and first floor level and the provision of a new extension to the rear of the ground-floor retail unit’ and other works.
Monitoring of the excavations within the main building and to the yard area exposed a mortar-rich rubble with modern debris and some 19th-century material, pottery sherds and clay-pipe stem. Also exposed within the ground floor was a mortared surface. This overlay a dark-brown organic layer that was left in situ. It was proposed to cover this layer with a protective membrane prior to construction works.
