Monitoring was carried out at No. 2 Francis Street, Galway, in July 2007. The proposed development entailed the construction of a new retail space on the ground floor and office spaces on the first and second floors in the alleyway between and behind the Blake and Kenny solicitors’ offices, which is a protected structure. Monitoring of the excavations in the yard exposed a dark-brown/black silty mortar-rich rubble with modern debris and some animal bone, roots, pottery and metal. Also partly exposed along the south wall was a stone-dressed drain. This drain was covered and left in situ. There were no additional features of archaeological significance noted in the site.
