Pre-development testing carried out at a site at The Old Convent, Eyrecourt, Co. Galway, was required because the proposed development is located inside the area of archaeological constraint for GA108–232, the town of Eyrecourt. The proposed development comprises the erection of a conservatory extension and all associated works. The test excavation was undertaken on 24 September 2007. The development site is located at the north of the existing convent building, at the northern end of Market Street. Three trenches of varying lengths were excavated at regular intervals (broadly 5m apart) across the footprint of proposed construction. No evidence for archaeological material or cultural layers pre-dating the 19th century was observed in any area of the proposed development site.
