Investigations took place along the route of the proposed N18 Gort to Crusheen road scheme. For the purpose of the testing programme the route was divided into three sections. Section 1 was tested by Dave Bayley (07E0456, see No. 626, Excavations 2007) and Section 3 by James Kyle (07E0489, see No. 589, Excavations 2007). The areas tested represented areas which were not known or were suspected to contain sites of archaeological interest and also previously identified geophysical anomalies. Test-trenching of Section 2 commenced on 28 May 2007 and was completed in June 2007. The testing methodology generally consisted of mechanically excavating a 2m-wide test-trench along the centre-line, with offsets staggered on alternate sides of it every 20–25m. A total of fifteen sites were identified in the area.
