Investigations took place along the route of the proposed N18 Gort to Crusheen road scheme. Site 197 was first identified during the walkover survey. Its origin and significance were unknown, although it could have been a burial mound of prehistoric date. Equally, it could be an overgrown clearance cairn or even a natural feature. Taking all of the possibilities into account, this site was assessed as being of at least local value. The hand excavation of the 5m by 5m area revealed the mound to be a natural feature. Nothing of archaeological significance was identified.
