Investigations took place along the route of the proposed N18 Gort to Crusheen road scheme. For the purpose of the testing programme the route was divided into three sections, with Section 1 tested by Dave Bayley (07E0456, see No. 626, Excavations 2007) and Section 2 by Ed Lyne (07E0457, see No. 610, Excavations 2007). The areas tested represented areas where there were previously unknown or suspected sites of archaeological interest; previously identified geophysical anomalies were also tested.
Test-trenching of Section 3 commenced on 28 May 2007 and was completed in June 2007. The testing methodology generally consisted of mechanically excavating a 2m-wide test-trench along the centre-line, with offsets staggered on alternate sides of it every 20–25m. A total of nine sites were identified by Team 3.
