It is proposed to construct Phase 2 of a residential development at Enniskillen Road, Monea, Co. Fermanagh. During the course of groundworks associated with Phase 1 of the development an intact cist burial was discovered within the area of the Phase 2 development. This feature was investigated by EHS and subsequently scheduled for future protection. Prior to Phase 2 construction commencing, EHS have requested that an archaeological investigation of the site be conducted, with particular attention being paid to the scheduled area surrounding the cist.
Test-trenching of the scheduled area revealed no evidence of a cist burial, nor any other archaeological features. The scheduled area is located on a steep slope and as such it is thought highly unlikely that such a feature would be located here.
Test-trenching throughout the remainder of the site revealed the remains of a cremation and cist burial. The cremation was fully excavated. The cist burial was further investigated through the removal of the capstone. This revealed that the underlying cist had experienced extensive disturbance and, following previous investigation, had been backfilled with topsoil. It was not possible to determine whether any human remains where contained within the cist. Only through further excavation will it be possible to establish this. There has been no subsequent work conducted on this site.
