A programme of monitoring and excavation took place associated with the construction of a lift shaft at the Templeogue Community Bridge Club, Templeogue House, Templeogue, Dublin 6W. The excavation was situated within the archaeological constraint zone of Templeogue Castle, a national monument, which has been the subject of archaeological work since 1996, then carried out by the late Daniel Leo Swan (Excavations 1996, No. 144, 96E0010).
The excavation for the base of the lift shaft, which was carried out by hand, measured c. 2–2.5m across and 1.1m in depth and was located at the south-western side of the Bridge Club building. The monitoring programme revealed a high level of disturbance to the ground as a result of the foundations for the Templeogue Bridge Club and modern services, and none of the features recorded during previous investigations in and around the Bridge Club were identified in the pit, with the exception of a layer of riverine silt with frequent water-rolled cobbles which may relate to the medieval City Watercourse, known to have run through the grounds of Templeogue House/Castle. Similar deposits were noted during testing and monitoring by Rónán Swan in 1998 (Excavations 1998, No. 224, 98E0221) and by the writer in 2005–2006 (Excavations 2005, No. 542; Excavations 2006, No. 709).
