The proposed development area is located to the south of Rathfarnham village and comprises a subrectangular area, which is currently occupied by Bolton Hall and a number of outbuildings, including coach houses, stables and a tennis court. A housing development is proposed for the area. Seven trenches were excavated by mechanical digger. The trenches were 6–18m in length, 2m in width and up to 0.85m in depth.
The profile encountered in all trenches was very similar, comprising 0.08m of sod/topsoil, 0.8–0.85m of sticky yellow/grey/brown subsoil, overlying grey/brown stony natural boulder clays.
Nothing of archaeological significance was encountered during the test excavations.
