The riverbank survey and underwater archaeological investigation and metal-detector survey of the riverbed sediments and adjacent riverbank features on the River Liffey at Leixlip, Co. Dublin, in advance of the Leixlip/Ballycoolen water supply scheme pipeline crossing, identified a stone-built quayside to the east and west of the project area. This feature was heavily impacted by the proposed development prior to an archaeological survey. The collapse of the wall yielded a fragment of possible late medieval pottery from within its matrix.
The current scope of work included the monitoring of the removal of any remaining stonework/masonry from the riverbed within the wayleave and the recording of a remaining section of the stone quayside to augment the archaeological record.
Monitoring was carried out during all further excavations, either within the riverbed or adjacent to the river, and the methodology employed included a finds retrieval strategy. Proviso was made for full excavation should material/features of archaeological significance be uncovered.
The further excavations in the riverbed and the adjacent riverbanks yielded no further archaeological features or artefacts.
