Testing was carried out on this site, as it lies within the zone of archaeological potential for Dublin city. The site is bounded to the south by Protestant Row and to the east by Montague Court.
Three trenches were excavated across the proposed development by a JCB. The foundation remains of post-medieval (probably 19th-century) structures were recovered. The location of these foundations corresponds with the northern and western walls of the building at No. 4 Protestant Row shown on the 1847 OS map. A large part of the site comprised fill deposits and some areas of garden soil dating from the post-medieval period were also identified. The date of these deposits was determined from ceramic sherds, all of which were post-medieval in date. The earliest pottery uncovered in the test-trenches dates from the 17th or early 18th century.
