Monitoring and excavation took place to the rear of a small plot at 13 Pim Street near the Guinness Brewery in advance of redevelopment works at the site, which is also a protected structure. Archaeological features were identified during the monitoring programme and as result a small excavation was carried out by hand. Early 18th-century drainage ditches and associated features related to local wool and leather manufacturing were identified.
Overall, the excavation demonstrated that significant elements of the pre-industrial landscape do survive in this part of the city, a finding which is surprising considering the extent of development here since the 1780s. Nevertheless, the base of early 18th-century layers and features are well preserved at a depth of c. 1.4m below the existing ground level, suggesting the potential for even earlier material elsewhere along Pim Street and the wider Grand Canal Harbour area. Such potential should be considered in future developments, particularly as the area lies outside of the zone of potential for historic Dublin (DU018–020), and in light of the enormous importance of the industrial history of this particular area for the development of Dublin.
