Pre-development testing was carried out of a development site located at Scoil Mhuire Óg, Crumlin Road, Dublin 12, on 18 and 19 July 2007. The client has been granted permission for the construction of an extension to the front of the school building, consisting of five classrooms, library, general-purpose room and ancillary staff and student amenities, and including the relocation of the pedestrian entrance to the existing wall on Crumlin Road.
In order to avoid existing and active services, the original testing pattern was amended. In total, ten trenches of varying lengths were excavated at irregular intervals across the site. The artefacts recovered from the test-trenches all date firmly from the late 19th century to the present date. Some of these were retrieved from the deepest layer of topsoil/disturbed ground and therefore place the earliest identifiable human occupation of the site within this period. No evidence for archaeological material or cultural layers was observed in any area of the proposed development site.
