As part of an assessment, test-trenching was carried out to study the impact on the potential archaeological resource of a proposed water tank and associated pipeline at Castleknock College, Dublin 15. The area of proposed development is located within the area of archaeological potential for the site of a windmill (DU017–013), c. 150m east of Castleknock Castle (DU017–012), at the summit of what is thought to be a natural rise.
Testing took place on 9–10 July and 14 August 2007. Initially two trenches were excavated to test the location of the proposed water tank and the line of the associated water pipe. In Trench 2, located to the east of the remains of a tower which contains an existing water tank, four grave-cuts containing human skeletal remains oriented east–west were identified. A further two trenches were excavated to assess whether human remains extended into the wider area. Subsequently an additional seven trenches were excavated in order to find a suitable location for the proposed water tank and associated pipes without impacting on the archaeological remains. No further burials were identified in any of the additional trenches.
