An assessment was undertaken in advance of the construction of a housing development. The development site was located in a large field, with maximum dimensions of 425m from west to east by 175m, within the townland of Flemingtown, to the north-west of Balbriggan, Co. Dublin. The assessment took the form of a geophysical survey of the site, undertaken by Target Archaeological Geophysics (Licence 07R0188). The survey took place on 5 October 2007 and concluded that there were no significant archaeological patterns recorded.
This survey was followed by the machine excavation of a total of 1660m of test-trenches, which took place between 22 and 25 October 2007. Only one area of archaeological potential was noted, consisting of three ditches, two of them curving, containing pale grey clay fills. It has been recommended that this area be monitored during topsoil-stripping, should the development proceed, in an attempt to better understand the ambiguous nature of the exposed features.
