A small excavation was carried out along the line of the county boundary between Dublin and Kildare as part of the Kildare route project railway line. The section of county boundary investigated was located on the northern side of the Dublin to Cork railway line between the townlands of Aderrig (Co. Dublin) and Ballymadeer (Co. Kildare). It was defined by a broad shallow ditch and a low, overgrown, earthen bank. As part of this investigation, a 3m-wide section was hand excavated through these features. The ditch measured c. 5m in width and 1m in depth. It had a shallow, concave, profile and was filled by four deposits, all of which appeared to have formed due to natural silting. A fragment of red brick was recovered from the primary fill, while a sherd of 19th/20th-century white-glazed ware was recovered from the secondary fill. The earthen bank, which defined the western side of the county boundary, measured c. 1.5m in width and just 0.3m in height. It was composed of compact yellow/orange clay with no inclusions.
