Following demolition of the three-storey ‘Dilinger’s’ building in late February 2007, a four-storey steel girder structure was erected against the adjacent building to secure it. The digging of the ground for its base was monitored. The base area, 9.5m by 11.5m, was tested by two trenches, 9.5m and 6.5m long, on Good Friday 2007. Limestone bedrock was from 0.6m to 1.8m below the surface of this site, which sloped by 1.75m across the diagonal. A small amount of modern rubbish was found above the residue of sand/mortar/gravel with brick from the foundations of the former building. Otherwise nothing was added to our knowledge of this central part of Ballyshannon.
