This site, which was situated mid-terrace on Market Street, Magherafelt, was recommended for testing under planning conditions prior to development. The testing took place on 23 January 2007 and took the form of three test-trenches aligned north-east to south-west.
The test-trenches revealed a series of stone-built walls, which corresponded to the footprint of the Georgian building that had been reduced to slab level after photographic survey. The walls discovered formed the foundations for the upper levels of the two-storey building. The subsoil was at a depth of between 0.3m and 2.1m below street level. One small area of truncated cobbling existed at the rear of the building; this was set at what would have been ground level when the Georgian building was in use.
There was a basement room in the south-west corner of the building, which measured 3m by 5m in plan, with a mortar floor set at 2m below street level and with subsoil at a further 0.1m below this. This basement room would at one time have been open to natural light along the street frontage.
No archaeological deposits, other than the remains of the original Georgian house foundation and basement room, were found.
