Test-trenching was carried in a proposed development site in The Glen area on the eastern outskirts of Kinsale town. The site is located c. 40m outside the walled medieval core of the town. The historical and cartographic evidence indicates that The Glen formed part of a natural harbour inlet until it was reclaimed during the post-medieval period.
The stratigraphy encountered during testing consisted of two distinct reclamation layers. A 0.6m-deep rubble layer was encountered under the concrete yard surface and contained inclusions of brick and plastics. This overlay a 0.3m-deep layer of redeposited boulder clay, which contained inclusions of brick and post-medieval pottery, and sealed the estuarine muds. The trenches began to fill with ground-water at the base of the reclamation layers. There were no archaeological features or finds uncovered at this site.
