The development consisted of the construction of a warehouse and associated services on a greenfield site at Carhoo, Carrigtwohill. The proposed development area was located within the constraint zone for a country house (CO075–050) (Union Lodge on the 1842 OS map). The country house was originally located on the site of the proposed warehouse, although no surface trace was visible prior to testing. The Archaeological Survey of Ireland visited the site in 1984, however, when it was standing.
The foundations of the house were exposed in Trench 3. An amended method statement was subsequently sent to the DoEHLG to allow the full extent of the house foundations to be uncovered. The following measures were taken to ensure that a full record of the foundations and basement were made. The total extent of the structure was exposed using a machine with a flat grading bucket. Any areas of rubble infill between internal and external walls were removed by machine. Once the structure was fully exposed, a record of the building was carried out using the following methods: an overall site survey showing field boundaries, entrances and walls was undertaken; the structure was drawn to scale using both hand drawings and instrument drawings; where the masonry was exposed through the plaster, elevation and section drawings were undertaken; photo rectification and photogrammetry were also undertaken to provide a detailed record of the structure. This detailed report on the findings to include site drawings and photographs was submitted to the Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government and the Planning Authority.
