An impact assessment including a test excavation was requested prior to planning approval for the construction of two semi-detached houses within the historic town of Buttevant. The site is situated to the north-west of the town on Ball Alley Terrace, which connects Main Street to New Street. The trenches were set out on a north–south alignment across the site. Mechanical excavation with a flat-bladed bucket was used and topsoil was removed from four areas, two across the footprints of the houses and two others along the carpark spaces to the east and west of the dwellings. A loose layer of garden soil containing large quantities of recently discarded domestic debris was initially removed. The natural ground beneath the topsoil was exposed in all four investigated areas and nothing of archaeological significance was present.
